Theoretically, the solution is not that tricky – fishermen should avoid gears, which cause high by-catch rates and favour by-catch-free very selective gears. However, unfortunately by-catch-free gears might have shortcomings: they can be not equally efficient and they can be too expensive. In conclusion, it is much easier for small-scale fishermen (whose business is anyway going down in nowadays world…) to keep using gears, which they trust and already own than search for new solutions and alternatives.

So, the rationale of the project was to save protected species through helping fishermen in finding new and more environmentally friendly gears.
