Tourism has a growing potential as one of the major sea use activities in the Baltic region. Currently, tourism activities in the coastal areas of the Eastern Baltic Sea mostly concern recreation possibilities at the beach – the most popular resorts Jurmala, Palanga and Parnu gather thousands of tourists every year, while more distant coastal settlements are more suitable for relaxing countryside tourism.
There is increasing interest also in such sea-related activities like yachting, kiteboarding, windsurfing and diving. Increase of tourism is essential for development of coastal villages but it requires improvement of infrastructure as well as careful planning to avoid negative impacts on biodiversity.
