Wind energy, opposite to the oil, is clean, indigenous and inexhaustible. So far, wind farms have been erected mostly on land but there is an increasing interest to establish wind farms offshore where wind is stronger and impact on the neighbourhood smaller.

However, despite of the benefits of the wind energy, there are shortcomings: wind power is still relatively expensive to produce, especially offshore, as the building costs are very high. Also the construction and operation of offshore wind turbines can result in potential negative impacts mainly on birds (collision risk, habitat loss, disturbance, barrier effects for migrating birds) and marine mammals (disturbance, habitat loss) but also on fish and benthic biodiversity.
